6 tips to overcome writer’s block and writing an A+ essay

Trying to overcome writer’s block? We’ve all been there: staring at the computer screen, hands resting on the keyboard and wondering what happened to the thousands of dollars worth of education we’ve put ourselves in debt for.

1. Plan like you’ve never planned before

You can’t write a great essay without a solid plan, and it’s a great way to overcome writer’s block. If you don’t have one, this might be where you’re going wrong. Work out what you want to discuss. Think of it like you’re having a debate with yourself. Now, break the essay up into sections depending on the different viewpoints. Once it’s in smaller, bite-sized chunks, it will feel a lot more manageable.

2. Really do your research

When a writer is in the middle of a story and they find themselves stuck, it’s usually because they don’t know their characters well enough. It’s the same with an essay. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, how can you write about it? Want to overcome writer’s block? Get Googling. The research will provide you with answers to the questions you didn’t know you had.

3. Heard of the five-minute rule?

No, not the one where you get to eat biscuits off of the floor. Before you sit down at your desk to work, tell yourself you’re only going to work for five minutes. That’s it. Just five minutes. This is a great trick to get yourself going if you feel like procrastinating – or if you’re just tired. The worst part of working is almost always getting started. 4. Do something else

If you’re struggling to work, staring at a blank word document isn’t going to be productive and won’t help you to overcome writer’s block. Try doing something else, preferably, something creative or stimulating. Whether you paint a picture, play an instrument or go for a bike ride, stimulating the brain is a great way to get those creative juices flowing.

5. Set a schedule

With so many episodes of your favorite TV shows available on Netflix, it’s a good idea to schedule work and relaxation time according to your deadlines. Don’t be a tyrant with your planner. Instead, treat yourself like you would a friend or child. Reward yourself when you manage to work and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up.
